Dear Shapeshifters Members, Donors and Supporters,

For the past several weeks, like you, we have been overwhelmed by everything that has been happening in the world. The pandemic and massive civil unrest protesting police brutality in the U.S. have caused unprecedented cracks in the system that are demanding a new level of scrutiny, both outwardly and inwardly. We sincerely hope that this is the beginning of real, actual change for the better and for the creation of a new system that rights the wrongs of so many years of racial discrimination and injustice.

While so much of our attention has been focused on this historic moment, we have also been working behind the scenes here at Shapeshifters Cinema to re-configure the model of how we plan to continue operating, given the circumstances of the current state of the world. We remain committed to providing a safe, supportive space for sharing creative, progressive and thought-provoking work by artists and creative thinkers from all parts of the human spectrum. And until we can all be in the same space together again safely, we will have to figure out new ways of doing so separately.

On Sunday, June 21st, from 1-5pm we are hosting a Summer Solstice Pop-Up event to help usher in a new era of socially-distant programming at Shapeshifters Cinema.

Local members and donors are invited to come by during this time to pick up any perks owed to you from the recent Indiegogo fundraising campaign. We finally have these ready for you!

Members of the community are also invited to come by to pick up any items purchased from our new shop, an eclectic selection of artist-made items including DVDs, CDs, books, journals and more. Half of all proceeds brought in by the sale of hand-made masks will be donated to Critical Resistance, an organization that seeks to build an international movement to end the Prison Industrial Complex by challenging the belief that caging and controlling people makes us safe.

For this event we will also be offering special pizza kits for sale by our friends at Fist of Flour Pizza Co. that you can bring home to bake up for an easy, at-home dinner to eat while you enjoy Shapeshifters’ live web cast program later that evening. Viewers are invited to tune in from 7-8pm, from the comfort and safety of home, to watch a live performance of composer/musician Guillermo Galindo performing a variation of Sonic Botany, a project exploring how science has played, and continues to play, a role in colonizing and conquest.

During the Pop-up event, we will be enforcing all necessary social-distancing protocols and allowing only one person in the shop at a time. Masks are required for entry and hand sanitizer will be available on site.

Please join us!
